Years later, my family now uses oils regularly to support our physical, emotional, and mental health. To say they’ve changed our lives sounds cliche, but I promise you the difference for our family has been enormous.

Let me share with you the best way to get started with oils in your home, and then dig into a little of what oils are and how we use them in ours.

What’s a Quick History of Essential Oils?

Essential Oils have been used throughout recorded history for a wide variety of applications, not only for their aroma but also for improving quality of life. The Egyptians were some of the first people to use aromatic essential oils extensively in medical practice, beauty treatment, food preparation, and religious ceremonies. Frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh, and cinnamon were considered very valuable cargo along caravan trade routes and were sometimes exchanged for gold.

Borrowing from the Egyptians, the Greeks used essential oils in their practices of therapeutic massage and aromatherapy. The Romans also used aromatic oils to promote health and personal hygiene. Influenced by the Greeks and Romans, as well as Chinese and Indian use of aromatic herbs, the Persians began to refine distillation methods for extracting essential oils from aromatic plants. EO extracts were used throughout Medieval Europe for their antibacterial properties. Essential oils and other spices were traded all along the famous Spice Road from the Middle East to China, and the European desire for a reliable supply played a large part in the Age of Exploration.

In modern times, the powerful healing properties of essential oils were rediscovered in the 1930s by French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, who healed a badly burned hand with pure lavender oil. Another French contemporary, Dr. Jean Valnet, used therapeutic-grade essential oils to successfully treat injured soldiers during World War II. Dr. Valnet went on to become a world leader in the development of aromatherapy practices. The modern use of essential oils has continued to grow rapidly as health scientists and medical practitioners continue to research and validate the numerous health and wellness benefits of therapeutic-grade essential oils.


WHAT are essential oils and HOW do they work? 

EO’s are the life blood of a plant that can be found in the plant’s flower, stem, leaves, bark, or fruit.  They can transport nutrients, support cellular regeneration, protect the plant from predators, and can even purify the air. This tiny molecular substance that protects and supports a plant can do similar things at the cellular level for the human body. Such tiny molecules can support the immune system, digestive system, lymphatic system, and nervous system. They can even pass the blood brain barrier and enter our systems very rapidly (in seconds). They can enter, oxygenate and detox our cells, and even repair our DNA – all very rapidly. The oxygenating property of oils enables our cells to repair more quickly, which helps with their metabolism and growth.


Are all brands of Essential Oils the same?

No. Many easily-accessible, less expensive brands of EO’s contain additives and synthetics. Any oil that has an expiration date, says “for aromatic use only” or “do not apply to skin” or “do not ingest” are clues that something has been altered with the oil – they are not 100% pure, therapeutic grade EO’s (even if the bottle says they are!). It is critical to know where the plants come from, how they are grown and harvested, and how they are distilled. That’s why Young Living has a “Seed to Seal Guarantee” over their entire EO process. How do I use Essential Oils?

Essential oils are used for a very wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends depending on user experience and desired benefit. Essential oils are usually administered by one of three methods: diffused aromatically, applied topically, or taken internally as dietary supplements.

  1. Aromatic Uses
    Our sense of smell influences many physiological pathways including the stimulation of hormones and other metabolic processes. Aromatherapy is founded on the body’s predictable response to specific olfactory stimuli. Essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy applications. Certain essential oils, when diffused in the air, can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Beyond emotional benefits, diffusing essential oils can purify air of unwanted odors and some airborne pathogens. Essential oils can also be used as cleansing and purifying additives to laundry and surface cleaners throughout the home.
  2. Topical Uses
    Due to their natural molecular composition, essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically. Application of essential oils can have immediate, localized benefit to the target area of application. They have restorative and calming properties and can be used effectively with massage and beauty therapy. They are also natural disinfectants. The chemical structure of essential oils also allows them to be absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin for internal benefit throughout the body. (Some excellent access points to body are bottom of the feet, inside wrists, behind the ears).
  3. Internal Uses
    Essential oils can also be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions. Some essential oils have powerful antioxidant properties while others help support healthy inflammatory response in cells. Many essential oils are generally regarded as being safe for dietary use, but some oils should not be taken internally (eg, wintergreen). Do not use any essential oil product internally that does not have the appropriate dietary supplement facts on its label.

What oils do I use the most in my family? 

I wrote the story of how we started using oils for my son’s debilitating allergies h e r e. Since infancy, my son Mark has suffered from extreme seasonal allergies. Despite multiple doctors, drugs, natural and homeopathic remedies, and drastic diet changes, he did not significantly improve. We finally tried Young Living Essential Oils and the popular “allergy bomb” of lemon, lavender, and peppermint. We were utterly shocked and immensely grateful that within 2 weeks of using Young Living, Mark was off ALL allergy drugs and treatments. Thanks to essential oils, we got our son back.

After Mark’s transformation we started researching what else we could use oils for in our home. It’s amazing how versatile they are. Our family now use oils for all natural bug repellent, diaper cream, eczema/dry skin cream, cough vaporizing rub, healthy weight loss supplements, immune support, fighting colds/flu, postpartum depression recovery, energy boosts, hyperactivity issues in children, relief for my husband’s chronic back pain (herniated disc), sleep support, an alternative to (toxic) scented candles, and so much more. Oils have been a life-changing blessing for our entire family. That’s why I get so excited about sharing oils with other families.


Here’s a sampling of how we use some of the oils that come in the Starter Kit: 

  1. Thieves (Young Living’s blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, and rosemary): This is a crazy-powerful immune boosting oil blend. We rub it (undiluted) on our children’s feet in the morning and at bedtime during flu season. My husband and I ingest one drop daily. Warning –it’s very strong and unpleasant tasting, so we slam it in an ounce or two of water and then drink lots of water afterwards. It’s just as effective to rub it on bottom of feet, we just find ingesting easier.
  2. Lemon:  Probably my all time fav oil! Put 1 drop in your drinking water and use up to a couple times a day. (Make sure you use a glass cup, no plastic! The oil is so powerful that it will literally pull the toxins out of your plastic cup). For allergy relief, put 1 drop on a half teaspoon of raw (preferably organic/local) honey and swallow it. This helps coat the throat, break up mucus, and build immunities. If you have a diffuser, this one is great to diffuse with lavender and peppermint for allergy and sinus relief.
  3. Lavender: For sinus/allergy relief, apply (we do it undiluted, you could use a carrier oil such as coconut or olive oil if you prefer) on the sinus “T zone” on the face, behind the ears, and on the bottom of the feet. Inhale deeply, several times. For cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, put a drop directly on the point of injury. To help children go to sleep, rub a drop on the bottom of each foot. Lavender is a powerful, natural antihistamine so if your family struggles with allergies, this is one to always have on hand!
  4. Peppermint: For allergy relief, put a drop on your hand, rub together, and then inhale deeply and slowly, several times. For headache relief, put a drop directly on the point of pain, and on your temples and back of neck. For nausea, upset stomach, or car-sickness, rub directly on your stomach and inhale deeply. For help with energy, mental clarity, or just needing to feel more alert and awake, put a drop on your hand, rub hands together, and inhale deeply. Or diffuse it for a mental boost! I also love to rub my hands on the back of my neck and my shoulders for muscle/tension relief and feeling more awake.

Those are just a few samples of the products and ways we use essential oils in our home, but hopefully that gives you an idea of how vast the uses are for each bottle of oil.
